The lockdown of 2020 and into 2021 had effects on everyone. The effects it had on young people especially is now beginning to be realised fully in business. For the first time, we can see a real and significant lack of awareness and skills necessary in modern industries. Communication skills and techniques, personal responsibility, business etiquette, timekeeping and even how to answer a phone are among the many abilities now in danger and we also have to realise that many young people are not even aware of what industries are around them! The fact that businesses couldn’t engage with young people for two years is now becoming more and more clear. It is because of this, that DYW DG is putting together an ‘Industry Awareness week’ which will be focussed on the young people in the Jobcentre and whom are struggling to find work. Many are suffering from the points above so we are, in partnership with Dumfries JCP, running various workshops in the week around confidence, job interview techniques (inc online), CV building, work experience and more. The main event of the week will be an exclusive invited only event on WEDNESDAY 28th JUNE opening at 11.00 and closing around 13.00, ‘Industry Insight Day’ The event will involve several businesses operating 20 minute interactive workshops that teams of young people will attend in a round robin style. Each workshop will present and promote the business and/or the sector and aim to inform the attendees of what’s what and be a mix of fact and fun. We are looking to encourage the delivery of realism – including work expectations. These attendees may not have ever interacted with businesses before and so any and all presentations could be a much needed introduction. Each workshop is interactive to encourage participation, not just with their questions but in working with others and building confidence as well as of course, the all important meeting with professionals from business. The age group will be 18-24 years old and from Dumfries, Annan and Stranraer JCPs invited. If you are in this age group and attending the Jobcentre, then please ask your work coach for more information on the DYW DG Sector Awareness Week. LOOKING FOR WORK IN D&G?
