Robinsons – Paving the way for the next generation
Lockerbie based construction and manufacturing specialists Robinsons, joined with DYW DG to host a tour of their factory and headquarters to educate the next generation about the careers available within the local area.
Constructing the Future – Ashleigh Building
The DYW DG Work Ready programme works with industry sectors and local businesses to address skills gaps in young people. Through its ongoing partnership with Ashleigh Building, DYW DG offers students the chance to see how to develop a career in the construction industry, understand the huge variety of diverse careers available and get valuable hands on experience.
Gretna Gateway – the doorway to a great career
DYW DG first approached the Gretna Gateway in early 2017, to discuss and develop ideas around the DYW DG work ready service. Gretna Gateway was keen to address the issue of recruiting on the site.
Catering Project – Cooking Up A Storm
In September 2017, DYW programme managers identified the potential for Dumfries and Galloway school kitchens to share their expertise with the HE departments of their schools, and with pupils. This would give young people an insight into working in commercial kitchens, as well as inform them about provenance, food nutrition, budgeting and menu planning.

In the summer of 2016, DGW DG began discussing with Entrepreneur Me the possibility of developing enterprise projects in our region. From this, a mini business week was developed for the schools of Langholm and Canonbie, to introduce the idea to pupils of working for themselves and setting up their own businesses.

Graham’s Construction worked with DYW DG to offer pupils from Dumfries Academy, St Joseph’s College and Maxwelltown High School the opportunity of work experience on Graham’s sites in Dumfries.

DYW and SPEN – Making Sparks Fly
When Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) in Dumfries identified a persistent shortage in the D&G region of suitable candidates for employment, they met with DYW DG to discuss how to reach and approach these individuals. DYW set up workshops in host schools to showcase SPEN and its career opportunities.
Murray Farm Care – From Class to Grass
With DYW DG's help, Murray Farmcare has seen increased engagement with local schools and an increase in awareness of and applications to its apprenticeships.
Lockerbie Manor – To The Manor Born
While reviewing their employment strategy and succession planning, Lockerbie Manor identified an issue with attracting young, qualified activity instructors to the area. Faced with both a current and future shortage of staff, Lockerbie Manor approached DYW DG for help in overcoming these issues. With DYW’s help, Lockerbie Manor improved its recruitment process and successfully recruited locally.
Morrisons – Going Behind The Shop Front
Through its Work Ready programmes, DYW Dumfries and Galloway strengthens the links between young people and employers and helps prepare young people for the world of work, while at the same time securing the future of the region’s businesses.
Helping Young People Step into Care
Working in partnership, DYW DG, The Care Training Consortium (CTC) and Lowland Training Services put together an innovative 16 week Care Course for 18 to 25 year olds in Dumfries and Galloway, to introduce them to careers in the care sector.
Douglas Ewart High School – Forestry Commission Apprentices
In November 2017, when Forestry Enterprise Scotland (FES) advertised for 8 new apprentices in Forest & Timber based in Dumfries and Galloway, DYW DG programme managers promoted this opportunity in local high schools and four pupils were selected from Douglas Ewart High School to attend an interview.
Crichton Trust – From Acorns to Oaks
In late 2017, the Crichton Trust met with DYW DG to discuss recruiting the next generation of maintenance and horticultural staff. With the assistance of DYW DG Programme Managers, the Trust employed two new trainee gardeners.
Cochran Energy Solutions Worldwide – Video Case Study
Cochran LTD are global specialists in manufacturing and supplying industrial steam and hot water boilers, established over 130 years ago. The company discuss their business approach of 'growing their own', where they recruit young people and develop and nurture their skills.
